History The McQuish family owned MYRTLDALE FARM since 1908. In October 1925 they bought this tractor from the state dealers MALLOCK Brothers of Perth.
The Hart Parr was first used on their Watheroo farm WADINA until 1948. Further use of this tractor stopped about this time partly because of a burnt out exhaust valve and partly because of the introduction of the more modern rubber tyred tractors which were much easier to drive than the Hart Parr with its cumbersome wheels and rack and pinion steering system.
Restoration 1978 Hugh acquired this machine for the museum.
Restoration involved fitting a replacement exhaust manifold, a new radiator core, new spark plugs and fabricating a replacement exhaust valve. This took a little time. Eventually Hugh found an exhaust valve taken from a much more modern ships diesel engine.
The dimensions of this valve were correct except for the length of the stem which didn't present much of a problem. Hugh cut the stem to length, turned out a new collet grooves and machined the valve head to suit. A new wooden floor was built under the drivers seat.
Sand blasting and prime coat painting was carried out using a grant from the Lotteries Commission of Western Australia and the final painting was carried out by F Hayward and S Nail and the tractor was placed in the museum in 1994.
Hugh rang to arrange a time to visit the display and on the 19/2/95, William (Bill) McQuish and his nephew Tom, attended an official start up day. They assisted with the starting of their old tractor and then took it for a drive around the yard.
Bill and Tom both enjoyed themselves very much and before they left, they presented the museum with a spare magneto and a number of other spare parts, including a grease gun with special attachment to suit the Hart Parr grease nipples.
More recently, we received from Bill, some of the original correspondence from Mallock Brothers dated 1925, all very neatly filed on a piece of string which most likely also dated 1925.
Situations like this become very personal and it is a pleasure to be involved in part of our history in such a way.
